Holiday Stay

The Cottage

Simpson Cottage was built in the 1860s as the original home of the Simpson family, one of the first settlers south of the Hacking River.

Sensitvely restored, this 3-bedroom cottage provides a unique experience, where you can enjoy the charm of the old cottage, stylish contemporary living and ever changing views of the water and National Park views.

Simpson Cottage is situated above Bonnie Vale Beach, set in 1500m2 of lawns and gardens that blend gently into the natural landscape. A large timber picnic table is located below the cottage to take advantage of the beautiful setting. Visitors will enjoy cooking up a feast on the patio with a modern gas burner BBQ (spare gas bottles provided).

When you're ready for adventure head down the 50m track that leads down the hill directly to Bonnie Vale Beach and the Royal National Park below. The National Park and other local sites are accessible via a short drive - off-street parking is for up to two cars.

The cottage features three generous bedrooms, accommodating a maximum of 6 people. The main room, located at the front of the cottage, features a queen bed and French doors opening out onto views over the bay.

The second bedroom may be configured as a king bed or two singles, while the third bedroom accommodates 2 people in double bunk beds, making it a great room for the kids.

A delightfully cosy sitting room features original features including an open fireplace, high ceilings and French doors opening onto the sandstone paved patio.

A rear extension to the cottage houses a modern kitchen, casual dining area, laundry and bathroom, all with under-floor heating. Kitchen appliances include dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric oven, gas cooktop and coffee machine. The adjacent dining area provides a great spot to enjoy breakfast in the morning sun, with a washing machine and clothes dryer neatly concealed in storage cupboards. The spacious bathroom features a freestanding bath and separate shower.

A few steps from the cottage patio, an equally cosy dining gazebo seats up to 8 people, providing fantastic views over the bay. A ceiling fan and heater are provided in the gazebo.

The garage houses the second bathroom as well the TV and sofas.  In here you'll find a vintage pinball machine and a games cupboard. With two double sofa beds allowing for extra space and more areas to spread out and escape. Apple TV and WiFi are included.

Some things are just meant to be.

In 2009 our family spent a weekend holidaying at Simpson Cottage. The sign of a good holiday property is it sparks thoughts of owning it. We fell head over heals for this historical cottage by the sea and our minds wandered at the thought of returning to the cottage time and time again. Creating memories with family and friends, spending family Christmas’ by the sea, watching the kids grow up and have their weddings here and watching the grandchildren play in the garden.

But that was just our imagination! We returned back to reality in the city and our weekend away became a fond memory.

Fast-forward six months, and by some sort of coincidence, Simpson Cottage appeared for sale in the real-estate section of our local paper. Thinking that this could only ever be a dream, we picked up the phone and rang the real-estate agent who informed us that the cottage had already been sold but it would still be available as a holiday home. So, we settled on the fact that this cottage would just continue to be a place that our family would return to for holidays and special occasions.

A year after our first encounter with Simpson Cottage we returned. To our surprise and delight we were greeted with a for sale sign and with cautious hope in our hearts, we again rang the real estate agent. The GFC had hit and the original sale had fallen through. The cottage was indeed for sale. We made an offer and after much angst it was finally accepted. It would be another very long six months before the stars aligned and we could finally call Simpson Cottage OURS.

We’ve been the owners of Simpson Cottage Its been ten years since our dream came true and I still get emotional when I tell our story. I consider myself the luckiest human alive. Every time I open that front gate, I pinch myself, take a big deep breath and exhale. Even though we now have our names on the title deed, I don’t consider myself the owner; I’m more of a custodian, or perhaps just a chapter in Simpson Cottage’s 150-year-old story.

The cottage has seen a lot in those 150 years. She’s been neglected and derelict, seen wars, the Spanish flu, fires, floods, all while she watched people come and go, weaving memories and history into her walls. I’m merely a chapter in her story but in my book, Simpson Cottage is far more than a chapter. In my book there will two parts - one part without a sandstone cottage in my life and the second part with.

This wee cottage has brought so much joy to our family and because I’ve always known her as holiday cottage, nothing makes me happier to see friends and family making their own fond memories here.
